Rakesh Agrawal and Emre Gener of the School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University in the United States have proposed a concept of “negative hydrogen,” a concept that creatively combines the processes of power generation and hydrogen production into a single application.

The researchers first used concentrators to focus sunlight at one point to heat the water at a temperature of 1000-1300°C, and then use the generated steam to drive the turbine to generate electricity and break the water into hydrogen and oxygen. The produced hydrogen will be used to heat the water and drive the turbines at night and will not generate any greenhouse gases. Of course, these hydrogens can also be used elsewhere.

Because this process can be run around the clock, there is no need to suspend or restart the turbine, reducing energy waste, and the efficiency of the two processes is better than that of their individual operations. Dr. Gener said: “The average 24-hour average efficiency of this new device is 35%, which is close to the efficiency of solar cells using battery storage, but the proposed method is better than the traditional energy storage system because it is stored in the system we designed. The energy will not be over-discharged like a battery, and the energy storage medium will not fail with the increase in the number of uses."

This new concept will promote the era of sustainable, efficient energy.
